She was of the people he vowed to exterminate.
He was of the people she was taught to fear.
Music brought them together.
November 1942. The German army swarms into Southern France, occupying the quiet port village of Novella. The SS requisition a grand villa as their headquarters.
Directly across the road, behind the gates of their timber yard, the Rollains lead a double life. Helen, their ‘niece’, is a gifted pianist hiding a dangerous secret. Along with Andrée Rollain, she is part of a daring network of passeurs, operating under the boots of the enemy.
SS Captain Wolfgang Mueller is captivated by her music. When he asks Helen to perform at the colonel’s birthday party, she cannot refuse. A perilous connection forms between an officer of the Reich and a woman of the Resistance.
But the SS are not the only ones watching. Novella’s new Chief of the Gendarmerie, Albert Castagne, is calculating and brutal. Obsessed with purging the village of ‘undesirables’, he hunts with lethal intent.
Helen has not gone unnoticed.
This novel is inspired by the author’s friendship with a real Resistance heroine whose courage saved countless lives.
